Barbados' Beaches

Beaches in Barbados Covered in a Fine, White Sand Made of Ground Coral

Barbados’ beaches outline most of the island, and are covered in white, soft sand that leads out to the beautiful Caribbean Sea. There are beaches on the west coast, east coast, south coast, and south-east coast of the island, and all have their own unique characteristics and activities.

West Coast

The beaches on the west coast of Barbados are known for their relaxing atmosphere. The water along these beaches is good for swimming and participation in various water sports like snorkeling and sailing. The west coast beaches offer many restaurants and bars as well as a lot of available parking. The beaches are easily accessible and many have paths for walkers or joggers.

East Coast

East coast Barbados beaches are nice, but the waters on this side of the island are known for their very big waves. For this reason, swimming in these waters is not recommended. However, the beaches themselves are good for picnics and participating in other sorts of beach activities.

South Coast

Beaches on the south side of Barbados are known for high-quality vendors and a great spot for Barbadian locals to visit. Because of the breeze that this side of the island receives, wind-surfing is popular in this area. The waters are calm, so swimming and snorkeling are recommended. There is plenty of parking available and there are also a multitude of restaurants and places to grab a quick bite to eat nearby. For those who do not want to sit down and eat in a restaurant, beach chairs are available for rental.

South-East Coast

On the south-east side of Barbados, the waters are closer to the Atlantic Ocean. This means that there are more waves. The south-east coast beaches are not as popular for beach-goers. In this area, it is more common to see fishing boats than sunbathers, but it is a perfect spot for a family picnic. *** The beaches in Barbados are covered in a fine, white sand because the island itself is made out of coral and the sand is made from very finely ground coral instead of ground rock that can be found on beaches in other parts of the world. Barbados’ beaches are all public and anyone may access the water from any of them. However, a beach-front property owner may own a portion of the land beside the beach (up to the high-water mark). It is not a good idea to attempt sunbathing in the nude in Barbados because it is illegal. Barbados is a fairly conservative country and the natives are not comfortable with nudity in public. Therefore, law enforcement officers may approach anyone attempting to be on a beach in the nude and request that they put back on their bathing suits. One of the most fun aspects of going to a Barbadian beach is browsing and shopping with the various beach vendors. They sell a wide variety of goods that make special souvenirs. Vendors on the beach are legal in Barbados. In addition to the gorgeous beaches in Barbados, there are many other coastal features of the island. There are tide pools, tidal flats, cliffs, low-lying rock formations, and swamps filled with mangroves and wildlife. Visitors to Barbados will find the beaches as well as all of the other spots along the coast to be interesting and enjoyable.
