Barbadian Culture

Barbadian People are Friendly, Hard-working and Well-educated

A visitor to the island of Barbados will undoubtedly be greeted by a country filled with friendly people eager to share their great country with those who want to enjoy it. The culture of Barbados is creative, musical, friendly and out-going, and it is un-matched by any other country in the world. Barbados is made up of more than a quarter of a million people, most of whom are descendents of African nations. The island was run under British rule until 1966 when it finally gained its independence. Because the British ruled the country of Barbados for more than 300 years, there are many British influences that are evident in the country’s culture and language today. Most Barbadians have British-like accents, but the language that is spoken on the island is a really a modified version of English with a British accent. In other words, the country has its own, unique dialect. Because of the majority of resident’s cultural background’s being African, there are huge African influences that can bee seen throughout Barbadian culture. Everything from the island’s food to the art to the music has an African “feel” to it. Even the island’s traditional celebrations are unique. One of Barbados’ largest crops is sugar and the island celebrates the harvesting of sugar each year with a national festival. The festival is called, “Crop Over,” and it celebrates the fact that harvesting sugar was the most important economic element for Barbados for more than 300 years. While sugar still remains an important industry for Barbados, it is not currently the only industry that generates money for the island and its workers. In addition to sugar crops, the island of Barbados is also famous for its local artists. Many of the island’s tourists purchase high-quality art from the country’s local artists when they visit. The style of art is influenced by African, British and Caribbean factors. Not only is the community full of talented artists, but the majority of the country’s residents are also known worldwide as the most friendly group of people in the world. This fact may be due to high education level in the country. Almost 100 percent of Barbados residents are literate — which is one of the highest rates anywhere on earth. Because they are well-educated, they are able to obtain good jobs. Because they have good jobs, they are happier people! Because the country has only a quarter of a million people, the entire island is seen by many as its own small community. It seems like everybody knows each other... and even if they don’t, they are very friendly to strangers. It’s common to find a complete stranger willing to help with any sort of situation or problem that arises in public. Local Barbadians love to chat with each other and are often seen on the streets or in shops visiting with friends or relatives. The majority of locals are not the “keep to yourself” type. In addition to being overly friendly, the residents of Barbados are also very religious. There are churches all over the island and on Sunday, just about everyone attends services. Residents of Barbados are welcoming, smart, hard-working and proud of their country, their heritage, and their culture. They proudly allow these influences show in their music, art, cooking, attitudes, and their love for life.
