Insurance Companies May offer Discounts for a Good Driving Record

Let’s face it. Insurance rates can be expensive and paying for car insurance policies can seem like money going down the drain if they are never used. However, insurance is a necessity and a person never knows when an accident will happen and insurance will be needed. Being covered by insurance should never be avoided, but paying for insurance without ever investigating the types of discounts available can be easily avoided.

Taking the First Offer

It is a huge mistake to call one insurance agent on the phone, give him or her the information needed to write an insurance policy, and be done with it. This is a bad idea simply because shopping around for the best rates can save hundreds and even thousands of dollars per year. Different auto insurance companies charge different rates, and determining which company is the least expensive can be a money-saver. Shopping around is not overly difficult, and can probably be accomplished via the internet.

Insurance Company Discounts

Insurance companies will offer discounts to their clients for a number of different reasons. First, if there is more than one car within the household, make sure they are all covered under the same policy. Insurance companies often call this a “multi-car” discount. Most insurance companies will also offer significant discounts to people or families that insure more than just automobiles under the same company. For example, a person may have his or her homeowner’s insurance, personal property, and automobile insurance all under one insurance company. Insuring everything in this manner will help a person or family obtain the best rates from the insurance company.

Choosing the Best Vehicle

The type of vehicle(s) being driven is a major factor contributing to higher or lower insurance premiums. There are certain cars on the road which have not fared highly on crash tests. These cars will be more expensive to insure. Sports cars have historically been costly to insure, and so have sport utility vehicles. While SUVs seem like they would be safer vehicles than their smaller counterparts, over the course of several years it has been determined that they can cause great damage and severe injuries to anything and anyone they strike in an accident. These are the reasons SUVs are more expensive to insure. Cars that have certain safety devices on or in them may also cause an insurance company to provide a discount on an insurance premium. Safety features such as anti-lock breaks, airbags, and anti-theft systems are some of what insurance companies prefer.

Good Drivers Get Good Discounts

Anyone who has never been in an accident will probably receive a “good driver” discount from their insurance company. The longer the period of time where no accident has occurred, the lower the car insurance rates may fall. Insurance companies love people who rarely or never file claims, and may reward them with discounted rates. Also, enrolling in a certified driving course (and completing it with a certificate) may cause an auto insurance company to provide an additional discount. Such courses are often referred to as, “defensive driving” school.
