YonaguniJapan's small native pony is located in the southwest islands and is called Yonaguni. There is not much information known about the origin of the Yonaguni. Yonaguni are usually chestnut in color with a large head and well placed eyes. They have small ears and a short neck. Yonaguni horses usually have gentle natures and are strong animals. There are not many Yonaguni horses left in Japan- with only a handful of ranches and a hundred or so known Yonaguni horses in the country. A far cry from a few thousand years ago, when every home had one or more Yonaguni horses for transportation and plowing of their farms! |
