Kiwis and Americans Do It Different
Language
New Zild is the term for New Zealand’s variation of English, which is not based on any American English, only British English. There are few exceptions as some American terms are now used globally. In addition to the British English that makes up the language, New Zild incorporates the language of the indigenous Maori. Many places in New Zealand have Maori names. While many look too complicated to pronounce, they are actually all pronounced phonetically. One of the longest names for a location in New Zealand is Taumatawhakatangihangakoauauotamateapokaiwhenuakitanatahu. The word with English translation means "the place where Tamatea, the man with big knees, who slid, climbed and swallowed mountains, known as 'landeater,' played his flute to his loved one".
Driving
Opposite of America, New Zealander’s drive on the left-hand side of the road and kilometers are used in place of miles. There are similar rules when it comes to vehicle inspections and registrations but the New Zealand driver’s license is valid on a national level. While an American car receives an inspection sticker, New Zealanders display a Warrant of Fitness on their windshields. Also, New Zealander’s “give way” to traffic approaching from the right side.
The Cost of Living
Of course an accurate cost of living depends on the many aspects involved in different family lifestyle. There are some things to consider when calculating appropriate cost of living differences. The geographical location of New Zealand increases the costs of many items compared to America. Things like gasoline, computers, and vehicles cost more because they must be imported into the country. But there are many items less expensive than in America such as the cost of healthcare and medical insurance coverage. Key things to remember about New Zealand are as follows: New Zealand has a 12.5% Goods and Service Tax, which is already included in the price of the items displayed on store shelves, unlike in America where the tax is added on at the cash register. New Zealand does not have a tipping system. Pricing in New Zealand’s restaurants, for example, may look higher than normal but one must take into consideration there will not be an additional percentage added to the final bill for gratuity. Concerning income tax, the New Zealand government take less deductions than America, leaving locals to pay more back in annual taxes. However, there are no state or local taxation, no social security taxes for New Zealand employers, no inheritance taxes, and no capital gain tax on properties.
Employees
Employees in New Zealand are typically paid well but compared to American’s the salary rates may be lower dollar-for-dollar. Businesses are generally smaller than those in corporate America which give New Zealand employees the upper hand when it comes to associating with the company decision makers. Employees may also have more varied duties and more open work environment when it comes to sharing thoughts and ideas. When pursuing employment down under, be advised that employers will request a curriculum vitae (CV) which is the same as the American resume. Also, referees will be essential. For Americans, referees are the list of ones references. |
